The Moorcock (Elric) Revival?

Seems like we are in the midst of an Elric revival.

The number of videos explaining the character for younger generations is up.

The Doomed History of Elric of Melniboné

As are videos explaining how Moorcock's character has been shamelessly ripped off over the years.

And some interesting stuff on its place in popular culture.

Then there is the Ebay sales of Stormbringer RPG, which have doubled in prices since when I was looking.

If there is a TV adaptation or movie in the works, I hope China does it. Would be delicious.

  1. If only someone would do an Elric of Melnibone movie. I'm thinking Finn Wolfhard in the title role, but maybe you have a better suggestion.

[apologies...having just discovered your blog, I'm exploring some of the older content]

    1. You mean rediscovered? I remember us talking about something years ago. Glad to have you back. Long story short I’m in Vancouver and I’m actually a paid professional game master and award winning game designer now. Life is hilarious if you ride the wave. It doesn’t pay the bills but money to sit down and run a game is always welcome. But having people so willing to play that they’d pay is priceless.

    2. Yeah, I thought you were familiar. Sorry...just lost touch.

Life is amazing. Hilarious? Hm. Sometimes, but usually at my expense. Which is fine by the way...I am very blessed.

That is cool that people will pay you to GM for you. Once upon a time I'd be quite envious. But these days I'm more in the "teach a man to fish" category than actually doing the fishing for them. ALSO...so little time. Perhaps once my kids have moved out (around the time I hit 60), I'll try that road. But I'm not much into "people pleasing;" would folks feel their money was wasted if they died in one of my adventures?

What awards have you won? Are they for SB/Chaosium design?

Anyway, good that we connected again...always good to have another Moorcock-head circulating. I'll throw a link to your blog on mine so I don't lose touch.

  2. Yeah, I’m teaching the kids to fish at the school where I have my day job. Trying to prize them away from the iron grip of 5E. So I’m sharing games and giving away books and doing lots of free stuff but every couple of months I’ll have a paying gig. Doesn’t really mean that much but it does feel like validation. I was a co-winner of the Chaosium design contest in 2024. Paid Afu bills, but more importantly met some like-minded designers who are really good people. So I feel like leaning into the hobby and believing myself is the way to go. After I publish my Inuit game that won the contest, I’ve got a Japanese samurai game in me. And we’ll see what I move to create after that.

    1. Sounds awesome, man...keep on keeping on!

I always felt Chaosium's system would be excellent for a game set in Phil Pullman's "His Dark Materials" universe/world. Leaving aside the metaphors and commentary (which are fine, BTW), there's a pretty nifty adventure setting inherent there.

As I said, I'll try to keep in touch. Vancouver's not too far...maybe we'll run into each other at some point in the future.

    2. Yeah, let’s keep a line open. If your country becomes more inviting in future, I’d love to go down to some West Coast conventions. Some of the contest winners live around their assault all announce it here if I do decide to take a trip down south. I travelled to New York and Kentucky and California and Hawaii and actually drove across the USA and loved it. But right now just seems a bit tricky.
